Progeny-cum-Demonstration Orchards/Nurseries:

Progeny-cum-Demonstration  Orchards/Nurseries  have  been  established  for  different  fruits  in 95 locations in the State to serve as growth centers for the development of horticulture in their impact zone of normally ten kms radius. The objectives of these units are: 


1. Progeny-cum-Demonstration Orchards/Nurseries

2. Private Registered Nurseries

3. Plant Tissue Culture Laboratories

4. Olive Stations

5. Walnut Development Stations

6. Plant Protection Centres

(i) stocking of fruit trees of outstanding merit 
(ii) multiplication of pedigree and true to type planting material 
(iii) to act as model and demonstration orchards 
(iv) conducting field adaptability trials for new fruit varieties and testing of other Horticultural Technologies.
(v) to act as extension and training units for local farmers.

Private Registered Nurseries:

The propagation of fruit plant material in HP is regulated under the Himachal Pradesh Fruit Nurseries  Registration  Act 1973. So far  584 no. nurseries  have been registered  under this Act, out of which 517 no.nurseries are in the private sector and the balance 67 no.nurseries  in the public sector. About  two million fruit plants are  propagated in these nurseries per annum. The district  wise  position  of  private  registered  nurseries  is  as follows:

Olive Stations:

For  promoting  the  development  of olives  in the State, three Olive Stations have been established with the  objective  of  collection  of  varieties  and development of suitable package of practices for its cultivation.

Walnut Development Stations

For promotion of walnut crop in the state, a walnut Development Station was established at Nohra in DIstrict Sirmour & with the passage of time, the old & senile progeny trees have now uprooted. The Centre has now been taken over by the society(HPNMS) for development where in apple bud wood bank has been established under the World Bank Funded Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Development Project.


 

Plant Protection Centres:

354 no. Plant Protection Centres have been established in the different fruit growing regions of the State with the objectives of serving as 
(i) supply/sale centres for plant protection chemicals and equipments and 
(ii) extension units for the dissemination of technical information to the local farmers.
