Fish seed is the nucleus of all fisheries activities. In all six carp farms have been set up in the state which are producing 20 million fish seed per annum which is primarily of common carp fish. In order to meet the fish seed requirements of state maximum thrust is laid on strengthening of carp farms. New nursery area is being expended at the existing fish farms to raise their potential of producing stock able size of fish fry. These fish farms are also being equipped with Chinese hatchery, system used for breeding of IMC & Exotic carps on large scale. In order to meet the fish seed stocking of riverine sector a Golden Mahseer (Tor putilora) fish farm at Machhyal near Joginder Nagar in district Mandi is in its final stages of completion. This measure is going to strengthen the economy of riverine fishermen.
Head waters of rivers of state are suitable for cold water fisheries. In order to promote sport fisheries and exploit tourist potential; these rivers are regularly stocked with fish seed of Trout fish especially Brown trout. The department has also achieved a major break through in the field of commercial farming of rain bow trout and passing its technology to private entrepreneurs. To meet the enhanced demand of trout fish seed, the department has initiated a phased programme on remodeling and expansion of existing trout farms as well as construction of new one at Hamni in kullu district. Under this programme, augmentation of water supply and setting of modern hatchery has been taken up at Barot and Dhamawari farm. All the state trout farms are proposed to be upgraded on the level of Indo-Norwegian trout farming project with adequate water supply provisions and modern hatchery equipped with latest hatching equipments, adequate rearing space, feed mill and residential accommodation.
The department has also stressed upon strengthening of extension and training programme to prospective fish farmers to import training about various scientific fish culture aspects. Training programmes and awareness camps are also being organized to reservoir fishermen also.
The department has also proposed to create self employment opportunities in the ornamental fish sector as well as Pearl culture a measure of fisheries diversification.
